Current Algorithms

MD5 is currently the most widely used algorithm, but there are questions about how long it should remain so. The next most popular algorithm is SHA-1, but that also has some weaknesses.

NIST has published some other algorithms, SHA-256 and SHA-512, which may become used more widely.

Other algorithms on the horizon are Tiger and Whirlpool.



Obsolete Algorithms

CRC32 is no longer used.
MD4 is no longer used.
